District Institute of Education and Training, Almora is a heritage building designed in Indo-European architecture was initially established as Normal School by Britishers in 1906 and later gained its reputation as a premiere educational institute in district Almora. The phenomenon Indo-European architecture of District Institute of Education and Training, and its serene surrounding is a treat for everyone’s eyes. The fragrance of tall, dense green deodar trees all around its periphery provide it a spiritual essence. The foundation of this institute as ‘Normal School’ in 1906 was done to train teacher trainees later to be recruited as primary teachers. Since its inception in 1906 to about 1949 young and dynamic aspirants received B.T.C. and H.T.C. which paved the path for quality primary education in Almora. Later in 1949 it was established as Government Junior Training School whose primary function was to prepare teachers for middle schools and they were conferred Junior Training Certificate(JTC). In 1967 along with J.T.C. , J.B.T.C. course was also inaugurated which used to train intermediate pass out students of both Garhwal and Kumaun regions for this 2 years course. Afterwards several courses like refresher, research, writings, surveys, in service L.T. trainings have been organizing in this institute. This historic institution gained the status of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in 1992. Till now it has been working as a prestigious institute for several in-service and pre–service teacher training courses including surveys and researches.
